The Building Societies Association, a body representing the UK’s building societies, has published a paper presenting the challenges facing the housing industry in 2019. “We should be building around 200,000 homes each year,” they argue, “just to keep up with existing demand; and nearer to 300,000 if we want to reduce the deficit in supply, which has been pushing prices up”. Government targets have been missed for decades”, they say, “as if governments built houses anyway, which – mostly – they don’t”. Finally, there is an appeal: “If we are to produce enough homes, we need big changes.” Read the paper – BSA
