The global multi-disciplinary engineering giant, Arup, has published a report, How Modern Methods of Construction can deliver through the planning system.
The report begins by highlighting the dearth of UK off-site housing – currently 10% – even though millions of homes are needed in the future. They point out that it has, “found evidence that the planning system is considered too rigid and unaccommodating for MMC”, that research has, “focused mainly on the financial and technical barriers”.
Concluding, they agree that off-site manufacturing is an opportunity to, “conceptualise, design and build much-needed housing”. It goes on to say, “they can speed up the process, make challenging sites viable, and provide varied and adaptable homes that respond to local character and needs.”
